It was the wedding entrance to beat all wedding entrances. The bride and groom sweeping into the dining hall with a pep in their step – and a glittering prize between them.
The bulk of the attendance in the Silver Tassie Hotel had not been aware that one Mr. Sam Maguire was on the guest list but then it wasn’t that long ago that he was expected to be in Donegal any time soon never mind being held aloft by Letterkenny couple Brian Kelly and Helena Thompson on one of the biggest days in their lives.
It was going to take something special to beat the respective entrances of the bridesmaids and best man/groomsmen, but undoubtedly Sam’s arrival with the newlyweds heaped the icing on the cake.
The latter was circulated around the hall for multi photographic opportunities and while another engagement on Saturday night meant he couldn’t quite manage to get to all the tables, he was nevertheless afforded the warmest of welcomes.
It had, as the groom admitted, taken eighteen years for the day itself to arrive ever since a younger Brian had made a pledge to an equally younger Helena near the grotto on the New Line Road. But, as he pointed out in his speech, he had to wait until Sam got here first.
The day, however, truly belonged to the couple themselves and their three children, Amy, Hugh and Niamh.
Earlier Brian and Helena had tied the knot in a memorable ceremony in St. Eunan’s Cathedral where Fr. Frank McHugh had performed the nuptials.
An emotional occasion all round, or as groomsman, Kieran Kelly, had put it in his few words to the multitudes at the wedding reception: “Even the cake was in tiers…!.”
