New ideas sought for Seachtain na Gaeilge in Falcarragh

Pobal Eascarrach and an tSean Bheairic will facilitate a public meeting that will take place in Ballina Resource Centre, Falcarragh, on Thursday 25th October at 7pm to promote the annual Seachtain na Gaeilge festival in the area in 2013.

The international Irish language festival will run from 4 - 17 March 2013 and new ideas are being sought from the public about the events and initiatives which can be organised locally during the festival to bring more Irish-speaking opportunities to the local community.

The meeting will give an opportunity to all interested parties in Cloughaneely to have their say and to look back on the festival in the area in recent years, its strengths, and weaknesses and how to improve the range of events that are organised locally.

A representative from the national Seachtain na Gaeilge office will be present to give information about the national festival and the support that is available to local groups which organise events for the festival.

According to Caitlín Uí Laifeartaigh Pobal Eascarrach and Paddy Mc Hugh An tSean Bheairic, “Both groups have been organising events in the area for Seachtain na Gaeilge for a number of years but we felt that we wanted to add something to the festival in the upcoming year. We would love to increase the community’s participation in organising events and to have better coordination between local groups to bring a really amazing Seachtain na Gaeilge to the people of the community.”

Brenda Ní Ghairbhí, Manager of Seachtain na Gaeilge, said: “I am delighted to be coming to Falcarragh for this planning meeting. Not only will the meeting develop contacts between the local community and event organisers, but the community will also be able to influence the types of events that will take place for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2013 and the opportunity to get involved in organising the events too, of course!”

More than 200 groups around the country and abroad organise hundreds of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge each year, to give people the opportunity and confidence to speak Irish in a friendly and fun environment. Events are registered on www.snag.ie, where you can search for events in your area as well as information about youth competitions and various initiatives during the festival.

2013 will be a very important year for Seachtain na Gaeilge in 2013 as the festival will also be a part of the tourism initiative, The Gathering Ireland, which will be attracting hundreds of thousands of extra visitors to Ireland throughout the year; and also a part of Bliain na Gaeilge, a celebration of 120 years of the Irish language revival and movement since Conradh na Gaeilge was set up in 1893.
