Genuflecting to politicians 21-05-09

Sir, The economist David McWilliams couldn't have put it better when he said that Donegal people spent far too long genuflecting to politicians.

The fact that Pat the Cope has been coaxed to run for the European parliament again shows that Fianna Fail expect this unorthodox trend to continue, but will it?

Hopefully people will no longer genuflect so low that it would even embarrass an ostrich. Pat the Cope is clearly not the right man for Europe, given that he's a proven yes man", not once has he ever voted against government policy even when it meant job losses on his own doorstep.

The reason we are being curtailed now by so much restrictive red tape from Brussels is because of the eagerness put into nodding heads in submission for fear of rocking the boat by successive representatives of the two main parties on this Island, Fine Gael and Fianna Fil.

The evidence of this is irrefutable, so irrespective of Pat being 'a nice friendly man' who holds the door open for you and suchlike, what we need right now is a bit of inspiration and someone who can invigorate us by raising the decibels to a much higher level and not allow themselves to be talked over rather than talked too.

One glaring example is the Lisbon Treaty. Why are we being forced into a rerun? Because the big guns in the European parliament are not listening to us anymore. We're becoming irrelevant. Something else that bothers me, if we purport to be classed as a half decent Christian country at the very least ask why Fianna Fil feel the need to join up with a group (ELDR) which supports abortion, euthanasia and destructive embryo research and even wants to cut funds available to farmers, and could he clarify where he stands on theses issues.

On his election pamphlet, (in very small writing like the Fianna Fil logo) Troidfidh se ar son iascairi na tire ag leibheal Eorpah" he conveniently forgot that he oversaw the decimation of the fishing sector, so God help any farmer holding his breath.

People must forget civil war politics. Just because De Valera gave out free beef once upon a time doesn't mean that you still vote Fianna Fil. After all, the reason the British didn't take it was because it was full of TB, so remember one thing, keep genuflecting to the soldiers of fortune, and that's your guarantee that we're going to be saying yes to a lot more than we bargained for.

Yours,

J Woods,

Gort an choirce.
