Hurricane-stricken Haiti aid appeal

While the damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy on New York and New Jersey has dominated headlines here, the chaos, devastation and suffering in Haiti has garnered less attention.
Two weeks ago, Hurricane Sandy hit Haiti resulting in up to 70% of crops being destroyed as well as the loss of livestock, homes and lives. With so little help from neighboring countries, there has been rioting and unrest due to food and water shortages.
With continuous rain, cholera is once again increasing.
Soul of Haiti has been active in Haiti since 2008. Most of the communities in which the charity operates have been devasted by this most recent hurricane.
Damien Meany, the charity’s country director in Haiti works closely with other aid organisations there to ensure help gets to where it is needed most. This week alone, he helped distribute 10,000 bottles of water and 5,000 food buckets containing rice, flour and oil. On a conference call this week, he told fundraisers here in Donegal that even distribution of help is challenging with roads washed away and access to some communities blocked off. He reports 72 fatalities with 22 people still missing.
