The Christmas season is officially underway, at least in Donegal town and Frosty – the weather, not the Snowman! - was on hand at the weekend to add an extra seasonal touch to the festivities.

The occasion was the A Little Taste of Christmas Fair and Christmas Lights Switch-On which took place on Sunday.

It would seem that everyone is ready for to enjoy some festive cheer after all the doom and gloom, as there was a great turnout to both the Festival Fair in the Abbey Hotel and the Christmas Lights ceremony on the Diamond.

This was the second Chirstmas Fair and it proved an even bigger hit than last year. In fact, it could easily have run over two days instead of one.

One of the organisers, Ernan McGettigan, said they were delighted with the turnout, especially as it means local people are supporting local businesses, manufacturers, artisans and craftspeople.

“What many people have been telling us this year is that they are choosing to shop local this Christmas, and that is good news for everyone.

“The euro/sterling exchange rate isn’t what it was and fuel costs are soaring, so going North to shop is a much less attractive option. Also, people are fed up with the hassle of shopping in big crowds, in impersonal multiples. Many tell us they are happy to re-discover the pleasure of personal service in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.”

And there certainly was plenty to choose from – clothing, jewellry, home-made foods, Christmas decorations, gifts, household goods – it was all there.

There were also a number of special food-themed events, including the launch of Sian Breslin’s new e-book and cookery demonstrations by Brian McDemott and Anthony Armstrong.
