The second staging of the Drimarone Open Darts Tournament took place in the Bluestack Centre, Drimarone on Sunday 29th of January. With 76 entrants this again turned out to be a very successful and enjoyable event for both young and old. There were plenty of local entries along with a good representation from all over the county and further afield and there was a very high standard of darts on show throughout the day.

In the main event the O’Neill’s Bar sponsored Cup the Final was won for the second year running by Ramelton thrower Martin McCloskey. McCloskey again produced a display of first class darts throughout the tournament, having won the inaugural event at this venue 12 months ago. McCloskey accounted for Carrick man Raymond Hegarty in the semi-final and following this he went on to defeat Belleek’s James Deery in the final. James Deery accounted for fellow Belleek man Michael Timoney in a keenly fought derby in his own semi final.

In the Frankie Greene Plumbing sponsored Shield there was plenty of local interest right into the latter stages. Local lad Jamie McGroary was the surprise package of the day storming his way to the final with a string of impressive performances, not least his semi final victory over Killybegs man John Pringle. In the other semi-final John Flood who travelled from North of The Gap for the day defeated Adrian McGroary from Donegal Town with strong family connections in Drimarone. In the final the more experienced Flood was ultimately too strong for his younger opponent and took the trophy much to the disappointment of Jamie’s strong and vocal army of local supporters.

The organisers wish to thank the following who sponsored the 8 dart boards: O’Neill’s Bar, Letterbarrow; Lazy Bush Inn, Mountcharles; Mohan’s Bar, Frosses; Donegal Town Plumbing & Heating; Donegal Town Hardware; Classic Hardware (James McGroary); Doherty Tiling, Donegal; Rory Thomas Transport, Frosses

The main organiser Frankie Greene said: I’m delighted with the response to this tournament from all the entrants and also the locals who have come out again today to support this event in large numbers”.

He also wished to thank all those who sponsored spot prizes for the raffle, the caterers, bar staff and all those who assisted in the running of the event in any way. In congratulating the winners Frankie had one final message for dart entusiasts throughout Donegal: The last Sunday in January has for the past years been a great day’s darts in Drimarone so we’ll hopefully see you all back again in 2013”.
