Death of Maureen O’Neill

A pall lay over Killybegs on Wednesday morning when Maureen O’Neill (née Sweeney), the 31-year-old mother of four who died suddenly last Saturday evening was laid to rest.

Residents of the close-knit fishing community were shocked and deeply saddened as news of her sudden collapse, just outside her Parkhead home, emerged.

There was also widespread mourning in Dungloe where her family, the Sweeneys, are from.

One Killybegs neighbour, who asked not to be named, described her as “a lovely woman, very quiet and devoted to her family.” The neighbour continued: “Maureen was a shy and retiring person but very friendly at the same time. If you met her out walking she would always stop and have a few words with you.”

Great numbers attended both the wake at the family home and the funeral mass yesterday at St Mary’s Church.

A spokesperson for the staff at Harbour Lights Nursing Home where she worked as a carer told the Democrat: “Maureen will be very sadly missed by everyone here. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband Darren and the children for their terrible loss.”
