A group of Transition Year students have set up a new business which has turned out to be a ‘piece of cake’ to them.

The Mini-Company team from Loreto, Letterkenny are teaching primary school children in Co. Donegal about safety in the kitchen. They have now completed their workshop in four schools and are extending the offering to other schools in the county.

Marketing Manager of Piece ‘a’ Cake is Shannon McAleer. She outlined how their workshops operate, “We set up a PowerPoint presentation and a baking workshop. The presentation consists of twelve slides aiming to teach children about the kitchen and how to safely do certain things, for example we have slides about electricity in the kitchen, cross contamination, using knives and many more”

“We show children how to mix ingredients together, we teach them how to hold a knife, how to clean up after themselves and we also let them decorate cupcakes of their own. We give each child a homemade cake mix which has a label on the front with instructions for each child and is completely hygienic and free from any artificial preservatives and colours. This allows for safe and easy baking at home. Recently we have added kitchen and electrical safety cartoons and booklets to our company. We feel that this will really enhance a child’s understanding of these important safety rules,” says Shannon.

The Piece ‘a’ Cake team are already in profit and so far have visited the nearby Illistrin National School, St. Patrick’s National School, Cashelshanahan National School and Airhill National School.
